Joining our growing list of natural winemakers who utilize biodynamic methods is the project Laderas de Montejurra fronted by environmental prosecutor Emilio Valerio. They cultivate over 50 small parcels near the village of Dicastillo, in the Tierra Estella region where Vaerio was born and raised. There is the added remit of protecting the local countryside and its biodiversity. Spanish natives Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha vines are matched with Cabernet and Merlot at altitudes of up to 1,000 metres. There is only concrete or wood used in the cellar which helps to express the natural fruit character and terroir in the wines. New French winemaker Olivier Rivere has his own biodynamic project in Rioja and comes with impeccable credentials. Jancis Robinson is a fan, naming it her Wine of the Week on her Purple Pages in December 2010. New white wine, La Merced is 100% Malvasia fermented and aged in large oak barrels, oily and mineral on the palate.
