Seasoned Indigo watchers will know that we have a soft spot for great Pinot Noir. When we heard about Misha’s Vineyard, we were intrigued: top quality Pinot, but also beautiful Riesling, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, luscious Pinot Gris and exotic Gewurztraminer, all lovingly crafted by Olly Masters, the former winemaker at the Ata Rangi Estate. Misha and Andy Wilkinson have had very successful business careers and have always fancied using the considerable skills gained to bring to life their passionate goal of establishing the best possible vineyard in Central Otago. The ‘no compromise’ philosophy behind Misha’s Vineyard wines requires an exacting sustainable viticulture regime, hand-picking and considerate winemaking methods. The results are exceptional. Indeed in September 2010, Decanter named Misha’s Vineyard as one of New Zealand’s Top 20 Vineyards, a great accolade for a relatively new winery. The names of the wines refer back to Misha’s upbringing. Her mother was a doyenne of the stage and Misha’s early life was spent at the side of the stage. We feel confident that Misha’s Vineyard Wines are destined to cement their place at New Zealand’s top table for decades to come.
In terms of the physical aspects of the vineyard, they are varied and help to produce the different styles of wine produced; Moderate to steep slopes, gently undulating and comprising of wind-eroded and water dissected minor ridges and associated areas of loess.
Soils range from outcrops of schist to very fine dusty sands; from extremely hard red boulders to pockets of sticky red clay; and from river gravels to coarse sands – even a small pocket of rich loam. These soils are very complex as they are essentially a combination of glacial outwash and river gravels.
