Truly one of Spain's real winemakers, Jose Luis Mateo is rightly lauded amongst his peers, who talk reverentially about his skills and approach. Jose Luis is calm, serious and contemplative which is reflected in his wines. In this unique 14 hectare estate split between different parcels, there is a huge diversity of soils; slate, iron, granite, schist and quartz. This diverse terroir enables Jose Luis to cultivate red varieties such as Bastardo, Mencía, Caíño Redondo, Caiño longo, Zamarrica, Brancellao, Sousón y Arauxa and white varieties such as Dona Blanca, Treixadura, Verdello y Monstruosa de Monterrei. Indeed, Kew Gardens would be proud of such a viticultural collection as this and he is keeping some of these varieties alive. Add stellar pocket-rocket winemaker Raul Perez, (he of the Midas touch) and one can see why these tiny production wines are so highly sought after. Jose Luis also uses biodynamic principles and varies production techniques according to vintage. In a world where the term boutique wines has become marketing speak, these are the real deal.
