| We have spent many an hour tasting our way through Portuguese wines, seeking the fresh balanced style that we prefer our wines to have. More by luck than judgement, we stumbled upon winemaker Fernando Coelho's Quinta do Tourais. His blending of the excellent indigenous varieties (Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão) combines the lofty aromatic qualities that they produce with the freshness that keeps the wines focussd on the palate. Couple this with fermentation in traditional granite tanks, a judicious use of oak and stainless steel for ageing, and the results are wines that are highly elegant. Tourinio is aged 30% in oak and the rest in stainless steel. Touronio has a tiny annual production of around 2,000 bottles. We also like the distinctive, smart packaging. |
