We had been working with superstar winemaker Raul Perez for a number of years when we began working with his family estate, Castro Ventosa. This is where he cut his winemaking teeth as a teenager, and where he is still the consultant winemaker today. Castro Ventosa was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and has never changed hands. Their wines are lovely examples of Mencía at its best, the result of careful and dedicated work in the vineyard and a mostly hands-off approach in the cellar, a superb introduction to this under the radar variety. Castro Ventosa have always had a very traditional profile, but they are adapting to the new categories from the Bierzo appellation. They are focusing on their vineyards and using larger barrels, turning their style toward more freshness in the wines.
