The Monte Rio project was born, as so many great ideas are, over a bottle (or two!) of wine. It’s an homage to the undervalued grapes - like Mission, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and French Colombard - from heritage vineyards in California. Patrick Cappiello has worked in, and run the sort of restaurants which are on food and wine lovers’ radar for 20 years. While he was sommelier at Veritas in New York in 2005, he met and formed a friendship with Pax Mahle. As well as a background in restaurants, they both share an appreciation for holistic winemaking - choosing their vineyards with care - all grapes are from organic and sustainable sites. With great fruit, they can make their wines with as little intervention as possible in the winery. These are pure and fruit focused, thirst quenching wines. We’re excited to bring these balanced, easy-to-love, food-friendly wines in the spirit of old California to the UK.
