Rhen Dodd clearly can't sit still (Ephemera/Jamsheed), here's another project to get excited about. This time he's collaborating with friend Dan Wheeler, to farm a small block of 20 year old Chardonnay and Syrah vines in Chum Creek a cooler pocket, north of the Yarra Valley. It was a chance find, the owners don't have the resources to manage the vines, but didn't want to pull them out, so they contacted Melbourne Polytechnic to see if any of the viticulture students were interested in managing them. Dale and Rhen jumped at the chance, recognising a unique opportunity to start their own label using their own fruit. They made made a decision early on to run the vineyard completely organically using some biodynamic techniques. The focus is on generating greater biodiversity within the soils, because they believe this leads to more expressive wines. They're low intervention in the cellar, using seasoned oak and no fining or filtration, to let the vineyard shine through. The result is a beautifully pure and delicate Syrah that has already made its way into our personal cellars. We’re definitely keeping a close eye on these guys.
