Established in 1857, this ancient vineyard has layered soils of red-brown clay, sandstone and quartz. Fragments of micaceous schist are scattered across the terrain. Positioned at 390 meters above sea level, it lies within the rain shadow of the Mount Lofty Ranges, perched on a plateau with an easterly view over the Murray Mallee. The wine is named after Glen Monaghan, the grower who works the vineyard.
The vineyard is surrounded by rocky walls, one part of which is unrendered. During winter, dampness seeps into the wall, allowing a delicate garden of maidenhair ferns to flourish within the rock, forming a natural "stone garden". The wine label features a silhouette of a maidenhair fern set against the rocks.
