Domaine Guion

Bourgueil

Domaine Guion was established in 1950 and is located in the heart of Bourgueil. Back then, the family were largely self-sufficient: also raising farm animals as well as planting many vegetables and grains in addition to their vines. The focus for the Guion family was always to preserve and nourish the land around them. With this in mind, they began to farm organically in 1965, becoming renowned as pioneers of organic grape growing in the Loire Valley by their fellow vignerons. Their son Stéphane took a particular interest in the vines and after completing his studies in Bordeaux, he took over the 8.5 hectares from his father in 1994. In 2021 the estate became Demeter certified biodynamic.Stéphane embraces a ‘hands-off’ approach in the winery. The grapes are destemmed and ambient yeasts are used to start the fermentation which takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wines are lightly filtered and only very small amounts of sulphur dioxide are added before bottling. The results speak for themselves: they are incredibly precise wines, with vibrant red fruit character and well-structured tannins. Although very approachable in their youth, they have impressive ageing potential and are a truly lovely expression of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc.
