Germán Masera always yearned for a career that kept him connected to nature. After graduating with a degree in oenology, he honed his skills across the vineyards of Mendoza, Patagonia, Spain and the USA; four distinct areas with endless opportunities for learning and growth. In 2015, he and Ayelén began building Escala Humana, a project uniting tradition and innovation, with enormous respect for the land and the ecosystems within. Dedicated to understanding the nuances of the region, they enlisted the help of scientists from the areas of geophysics, agriculture and biology to explore the diversity of the land they now inhabited – with the goal of blending their work seamlessly into the existing landscape.
The couple farm several micro plots across historical vineyards in the El Zampal and El Peral areas of Tupungato in the Uco Valley, with altitudes hovering around 3400-3900 feet. The vines sit in the shadow of the Andes mountains, which soar to 17,000 feet, and whose presence lends a cooling influence to an otherwise hot climate.
Escala Humana produce two ranges of wines. ‘Livverá’ came first, and focuses on reviving ancient vineyards in the lower valley, where viticulture was first brought to the area by immigrants. The collection aims to produce fruit-forward, drinkable, accessible bottles. The ‘Credo’ range is the more serious, gastronomic project, a love letter to classic Argentinian varietals – finessed, balanced and built to age.
