Jable de Tao

Lanzarote

Carmelo Peña Santana, founder of Bien de Altura in Gran Canaria, is also the main man behind Jable de Tao, a new project set up in 2022 in Lanzarote. It is one of the oldest islands of the Canaries archipelago, formed around 15 million years ago, and only a mere 100 miles from the Sahara coast, it is these unique attributes that make Lanzarote a fascinating grape-growing region.Jable de Tao’s vines are planted on their own roots (“pie franco” in Spanish) and are 50 - 200 years old. These factors produce low-yielding fruit with extraordinary concentration. Carmelo exclusively farms native varieties such as Listán Blanco, Malvasía Volcánica and Diego, which are often vinified together as field blends. Very importantly, the vines are grown on a mix of soils: some have a volcanic origin with finer textures locally known as “rofe” and other are sedimentary with a significant sandy marine component, aka, “jable”. This not only explains the name of the project, but also the dazzling mineral profile and marked saline finish that all the wines possess. These are precise, taut, laser-cut whites, with stony cores and remarkably bright character and tension.
